“ON
TARGET” with Queen Anne Archers JOAD
by Tim Jorgensen
The Junior Olympic Archery Development
(JOAD) team, Queen Ann Archers, is well into its summer tournament
season. This year the JOAD Outdoor Nationals were held in Lebanon,
Ohio, on June 30 to July 2. Greg Begenyi competed in both the FITA
event and the Olympic Round. He shot a personal best in the FITA, and
qualified as an outdoor Silver Olympian. (He already holds Silver
Olympian status for indoors.)
The Virginia Commonwealth Games are
scheduled for July 14-16 in Roanoke, Virginia. QAA, under the
leadership of Coach Lani Young, will host the archery event at the
Games. Archery is also to be featured as a key event during the opening
ceremonies, and the QAA kids will participate a short skit depicting
target archery. Both adult and child archers from all over Virginia
will be competing in both recurve and compound bow classes, in all age
categories. The Commonwealth Games is the biggest event of the year for
QAA archers. We wish all the QAA kids well as they head down to
Roanoke.
While the kids have been shooting, Coach
Mary LeCompte has been hard at work renovating the QAA website. The
site now includes an interactive component, and QAA members can post
their scores, pictures, and other relevant info for other members to
see. (Mary will monitor the site to insure that all postings are
appropriate, and that no one posts any personal identifiers.) Practice
and tournament schedules will also be included on the site, as well as
links to other archery resources.
Lastly, QAA is proud to report that one
of its former members, Nikki LeCompte, is shooting extremely well on
the women’s varsity rifle team at Texas Christian University
(see
TCU
Rifle Team website) She holds a rifle scholarship and despite
her heavy practice and
tournament schedule, has earned herself a spot on the Dean’s
List!
Way to go, Nikki!

hours collating the latest edition of the Chapter By-laws
QAA is always looking for more kids to
share the fun of archery. QAA holds weekly practices on Wednesday
nights and Saturday mornings at the IWLA outdoor range. All children
(ages 8-18) in the Arlington-Fairfax Chapter of IWLA are encouraged to
join QAA and discover the excitement of competitive tournament archery
through JOAD. Visit the QAA website (queenannarchers.org) for more
information.
Picnic and Fishing Derby
Another great day
dawned for the annual Picnic and Fishing Derby for those with
disabilities. The 37 special guests, were able to
participate in activities including air rifle with Tom
Ciarula, archery with Frank Boyko, hay rides with Durwin
Carter driving and fishing under the eagle eyes and direction of Bill
Suter and Carl Rice. The traditional picnic lunch
was prepared by Master Chef, Rick Kohne and his helpers.
The many volunteers
who help with this event come back year after year because although
it’s a lot of work, they always leave feeling really good
about what went on and the impact they’ve had. The
volunteers included Ken Brumback, Bob Baublitz, Wayne Owens, Joe
Turner, Ed Hyland, Gilbert Ramey, Robert LeFrancois, John Dudzinsky,
Frank Niccoli, Tim & Paul McBride, Gordon & Patsy
Riley, Bill Hill, Clayton Poteate, Gary Stevenson, Patrick Feehan and
family, Nick Hablenko, Joe & Eileen Pounder, Bruce Carr, Brian
& Jennifer Veit, Rob Davis, Andrew Korostelin, Tim Kravek, Art
Shope, Joe Doskus, Pam Meara, Nancy Keaton, Tilda & Bob
Bissonnette and Florence Atkins.
Coordinated by Bucky Sills,
this affair is a great destination available to special
individuals and groups who love to fish and play and eat. .
